How to Revise Effectively for SSC CGL, Banking & UPSC Exams — The Science of Revision

Most aspirants spend 70% of time learning new topics and only 30% revising. Toppers flip this to 30% learning and 70% revising. Why? Because your brain is designed to forget, and in competitive exams, forgetting is as damaging as never studying.

The Ebbinghaus Forgetting Curve

| Time After Study | Information Retained |

| 1 hour | 44% |

| 1 day | 33% |

| 7 days | 21% |

| 30 days | 18% |

After 4-5 strategic revisions, the forgetting curve flattens and information moves to long-term memory.

The 1-3-7-14-30-90 Schedule

| Revision | Interval | What to Do |

| 1st | 1 day | Quick review (5 min) |

| 2nd | 3 days | Active recall — write key points from memory |

| 3rd | 7 days | Solve questions on the topic |

| 4th | 14 days | Explain it aloud without notes |

| 5th | 30 days | Full mock test covering topic |

| 6th | 90 days | Cumulative revision |

Active Recall vs Passive Reading

| Passive | Active |

| Re-reading notes | Closing the book and recalling |

| Highlighting | Writing key points from memory |

| Watching videos | Explaining without notes |

Subject-Specific Techniques

**Formulas:** Write all formulas on a single sheet. Stick on wall. Write 10 random formulas from memory every morning.

**GK:** Use Anki flashcards. One card = one fact. Review on 1-3-7-14-30 schedule. Aim for 50 new cards daily.

**Vocabulary:** Learn 10 words daily. Revise yesterday's before today's. Use each word in a sentence.

**Reasoning:** Solve 20 questions daily from mixed topics. Keep a pattern log of tricks.

The Mistake Log Method

Every time you get a question wrong in a mock, log it:

| Question | Topic | What I Did Wrong | Correct Approach | Revised On |

| Narmada origin? | Geo | Wrote Godavari | Amarkantak | June 11, 14, 28 |

Revise the log every 3, 7, and 14 days. Remove only when correct 3 times in a row.

Weekly Revision Schedule

| Day | Morning (1 hr) | Evening (30 min) |

| Mon | Topics from 1 day ago | Last week's topics |

| Tue | Topics from 3 days ago | Mistake log |

| Wed | Topics from 1 week ago | 10 PYQs |

| Thu | Topics from 2 days ago | Last month's weak areas |

| Fri | Topics from 4 days ago | Mistake log |

| Sat | Full week revision | Topic-wise test |

| Sun | Mixed revision | Plan next week |

Last Month Strategy

**SSC CGL Tier 1:** 2 full mocks daily, mistake log revision only, 100 GK flashcards daily.

**Banking (SBI PO, IBPS PO):** 200 questions daily (50 each section), 30 min banking awareness, 3 mocks daily in last 10 days.

**UPSC Prelims:** 100 MCQs daily from PYQs + CA compilations. Focus on Modern History, Polity, Economy, Environment.

Common Revision Mistakes

**Re-reading notes** — most common and least effective

**Revising only strong subjects** — doesn't improve score

**No schedule** — "when I have time" means never

**Cramming everything in one day** — 3-4 topics max

**Ignoring the mistake log** — collecting data, not improving
